Let’s face it, most of us purchase an SUV because they are big. Bigger is better, right? But, a larger vehicle means more energy is needed to push the thing around. Thus, knowing which SUV provides the best mpg is worth noting.

In a rundown put together by whatcar.com, the clever chaps test out 10 of the most popular SUVs for fuel consumption. The tests were performed in a mix of rural, town, and motorway environments, driving at a regular pace, without any unruly driving techniques.

It’s worth running through the whole of the article from whatcar.com, but in the interests of brevity, below is a rundown of their findings.

Which SUV has the best MPG?

The BMW X7 xDrive40d M Sport auto is good for 31.7mpg. The BMW is ample in size, a great drive, but can be quite challenging down narrow roads.
Audi Q7 50 TDI Vorsprung auto obtains 31.9mpg. A healthy 282bhp is pumped out from the diesel engine, with plenty of luxurious amenities in the cabin.
Audi Q8 50 TDI S line auto comes in at 33.3mpg. A coupe version of the Q7, making it slightly more fuel-efficient.
The BMW X5 xDrive30d M Sport auto can hit 34.1mpg. a nice balance between high-end luxury and practicality.
Audi Q3 35 TFSI S line auto makes 38.0mpg. Lots of room in this one with 40/20/40 seating.
Audi Q2 35 TFSI S line auto with 38.5mpg. A smaller version than the Q3, thus producing better fuel economy.
BMW X2 xDrive20d M Sport auto with 39.6mpg. The best up to now for feul economy, but not as well kitted out as the above.
Lexus UX 250h Takumi auto with 40.4mpg. A hybrid using gas/petrol with great efficiency, but not the comfiest ride.
Audi Q5 40 TDI Sport auto with 41.3mpg. This diesel version is a nice balance between efficiency and amenities.
Mercedes GLA 220d AMG Line Premium auto with 46.5mpg. A pricey SUV, but makes up ground with the best fuel efficiency and a spacious interior.

Striking a Balance

While there is quite a difference between the BMW X7 and the Mercedes GLA 220d AMG in fuel economy, this area isn’t always the deciding factor. Other areas such as overall price and practicality can be just as important in the final decision. At least with the figures above, the fuel economy side of things can quickly be resolved.
