Higher Sales on SUVs and Trucks Uplifts the American Automakers for the Year 2015

American automakers, such as, General Motors Company (NYSE:GM), Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (NYSE:FCAU), are pouring money into their truck and SUV plants to meet a burgeoning demand for larger, gas guzzling vehicles. Gasoline prices, have tumbled to multi-year lows leading consumers to prefer larger more performance oriented autos over compact and midsized alternatives.

Further fueling the demand for larger automobiles, are growing lease penetration rates in the country. This is triggered by easier leasing options offered by the country’s auto dealerships as they feed off lower interest rates. Another goal is to push sales of new vehicles to 17 million units in the next two years.

Domestic automakers are already working to match their output to meet the change in consumer tastes. Last month, GM put aside $1.2 billion – one of its largest investments ever – to upgrade its Allen Country plant, which builds the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup-trucks. This is part of a broader plan to spend $5.4 billion over the next three years, to upgrade existing assembly and manufacturing facilities, to produce vehicles “that win in the marketplace”.
