German and Japanese Car Makers Lead 2016 Green awards

The Green Car Journal will announce at the 2016 Washington Auto Show, their choices for the green SUV green luxury car of the year, including the greenest connected car.

The overall green car of 2016 will be announced in October, but the run-up starts this January.

In the SUV category, the shortlist has gone to the new BMW X1 XDrive 28i, Honda HR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-3, and Toyota Rav4 Hybrid.

“After years of focus on building more efficient and environmentally positive sedans and hatchbacks, a growing emphasis is now being placed on SUVs and crossover vehicles, one of the hottest segments in the auto market.” said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of the Green Car Journal.

The Connected Green Car category will review the use of connected technologies in order to improve efficiency and safety.

It is no surprise that the SUV market is trying to push forward greener vehicles as they were the hottest selling automobiles in 2015, so should head the way for the greenest of vehicles.

But why no US contenders? In some ways the mindset is completely different comparing the US to European SUV makes. European automobiles have traditionally opted for a smaller engine and squeezing the most power from the unit, while the US still have a large view of ‘their is no replacement the displacement’. Both are viable methods, but as we are moving to an age where we are trying to use other methods apart from fossil fuels, we will see more fuel-efficient and hybrid engines from US manufacturers in the coming years heading up the shortlist.
